Anna Post -- great-great-granddaughter of etiquette guru Emily Post and author of Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette -- is here to help us answer this week's question. Find out what she had to say below:
At the risk of writing a very short column this week, the short answer is: no! All guest travel and accommodation is their own responsibility. Some couples choose to cover these expenses for a variety of personal reasons for select guests, but it's never required of the couple. If you aren't providing the transportation, do be sure to include information about travel details, including ground transportation options and costs, either on an enclosure with your invitation, on your wedding website, or both.
The fact that it's a destination wedding is worth noting. It's the one event at which it's especially nice of you to go the extra mile for your guests when possible, given how far they have come (and how much they have likely spent) to be at your wedding. But even here, providing transportation is a nice bonus, not a requirement.
